“The backbone of the U.S.’s strategic bomber force, the B-52 Stratofortress, will soon demonstrate advanced communications capabilities through the new AgilePod, enabling a modernized, further-reaching, more secure communication on the historic aircraft.”

That’s the opening of a press release published on the U.S. Air Force Global Strike Command (AFGSC) website, spotlighting progress on its AgilePod program.

Nate Dawn, Chief of the AFGSC Strategic Plans and Programs Modernization, Integration, and Technology Transition Branch, is quoted in the article: “Our goal is to accelerate and integrate disruptive technologies onto the B-52, B-1, and possibly other patrol-class aircraft.”

On Feb. 22, test pilots with the 49th Test and Evaluation Squadron completed the initial flight test of the AgilePod.

Fuse is an industry partner on the AgilePod program, as the payload integrator and designer of the TENTaCLE (Tactical Edge Network Targeting in a Contested Long-Range Environment) advanced communications technology.

The U.S. Air Force Global Strike Command (AFGSC) said that it is undertaking a demonstration to equip B-52H bombers with advanced communications.

“The AgilePod TENTaCLE [Tactical Edge Network Targeting in a Contested Long-Range Environment] program started as an OSD Rapid Prototyping Program, which allows us to quickly provide these needs to our bombers without the years-long timelines required for a permanent modification to the aircraft,” Nate Dawn, chief of AFGSC’s strategic plans and programs modernization, integration, and technology transition branch, said in a May 11 AFGSC release.

So begins an article spotlighting an important AFGSC initiative designed to “enable farther, more secure communications for the bomber.”

Fuse is one of the industry partners mentioned in the article and is the payload integrator for the AgilePod – as well as the TENTaCLE designer.

When defense and industry collaborate to develop tactical edge networking and communications innovations, hardware, software and system advancements typically take priority over integrations.

“Too often, just when the team believes that each of the innovations are ready to test, the ‘last mile’ of network integrations and critically important application flows don’t work as intended, and they’re challenging and time-consuming to resolve.”

That insight comes from Fuse’s Systems Architect, Jason Coe, in his Federal News Network article.

In “Change the Defense innovation game: Use a virtual network test bed from day one,” Coe describes a development process that uses a virtual network test bed (VNTB). Cross-functional defense teams are starting to use a VNTB to integrate suites of commercial off-the-shelf hardware and open-source technologies to validate and experiment with the combined network configurations early in the process.

Fuse, with Raytheon Technologies, is pleased to announce that the U.S. Department of Defense has recognized the companies with a prestigious 2022 Nunn-Perry Award for excellence in the DoD Mentor-Protégé Program. The award recognizes collaboration supporting warfighters by delivering capabilities across major defense programs.

“The DoD Mentor-Protégé Program has been a significant factor in maturing our company’s production process for battlespace networking products and airborne integrated systems,” said Sumner Lee, CEO of Fuse. “We are immensely proud to be selected for the Nunn-Perry Award and are grateful to Raytheon Missiles and Defense for their leadership.”

Nunn-Perry Award recipients exhibit “exemplary protégé growth and developments” under their respective teaming agreements. In 2022, this Mentor-Protégé agreement helped fuel Fuse’s 43% revenue and workforce acceleration – a reflection of key defense contract awards and production ramp up of the company’s warfighter-focused communications and networking solutions.

“Supporting the DoD’s mission to deliver critical capabilities to the warfighter is a top priority at Raytheon Technologies,” said Lionel Boisvert, Deputy Director, Advanced Technology Sensors at Raytheon Missiles & Defense. “The Mentor-Protégé program is a highly effective way to expand the supply chain and foster the development of technical capabilities.”

Established in 1990, the DoD Mentor-Protégé Program assists DoD prime contractors in meeting their Small Disadvantaged Business (SDB) subcontracting goals. The Program has since expanded, providing developmental assistance to Women-Owned Small Businesses, Service-Disabled Veteran-Owned Small Businesses and others.

The Program celebrated this year’s winners and their accomplishments on March 30, 2023 at the 2023 Mentor-Protégé Summit in Orlando, Florida.

In 2022, Fuse’s revenue and workforce grew by an unprecedented 43%, fueled by strategic client contracts, successful live-flight exercises and industry collaboration supporting production ramp-up. Growth reflects increasing demand for our warfighter-focused products as we transition into production and expand deliveries of advanced avionic and integrated networking pods to defense customers.

“2022 was a tremendous year of growth as we transitioned into fleet deployments for our software, hardware and integrated systems,” said Sumner Lee, CEO of Fuse. “Our team is working closely with warfighters as we deliver joint networking capability that challenges critical mission threats today.”

Strategic Contract Awards

In the first quarter of 2022, Fuse earned a spot on the U.S. Air Force $950M Advanced Battle Management System IDIQ that enables Joint All-Domain Command and Control (JADC2). By the end of Q2, the company won more than $17M in federal defense contracts for tactical edge networking on sea and air platforms.

Live-Flight Demos and Product Installations

Successful live-flight demonstrations included the Office of Naval Research’s Technical Concept Experiment and a joint Marine Corps/Navy exercise. Additionally, we delivered our first permanent Tactical Technologies Toolset installment at a U.S. Navy shore facility, supporting Naval Surface Warfare Center personnel monitoring the Aegis SPY radar at the Pacific Missile Range Facility. Fuse also completed T3 shipboard installations for the Naval Information Warfare Systems Command.

Collaborations with Industry Giants

A formal DoD Mentor-Protégé agreement with Raytheon Missiles & Defense is helping Fuse mature our production line for networking products and airborne integrated systems. Fuse is delighted to announce that we’ve hired defense program management veteran Amy Ruzauskas as Program Manager for our CORE® family of virtualized network systems. Supporting Fuse’s transition to fleet deployments for our software, hardware and integrated systems, strong program managers are increasingly essential for overseeing our three product lines. Ruzauskas, who joins Fuse from her role as Assistant Program Manager at the U.S. Army, rounds out our expert program management team.

“Fuse’s continued growth and integrated product initiatives are driving a need for broader programmatic oversight and development,” said Dennis Wojcik, Director of Programs. “Our program managers are critical to our success, and we are delighted that Amy is joining the team.”

Our PMs help ensure timely and innovative product development and maintenance across multiple customers and product lines in service of our mission to provide critical solutions for the warfighter. Combining engineering expertise with program management skills, each PM has deep experience across the military and with industry primes.

Amy Ruzauskas | CORE Program Manager. Amy brings more than 20 years of defense acquisition program management experience to her new role. She has expertise with both commercial and military satellite communications. She holds a PMP certification and earned a B.S. in Aerospace Engineering from the U.S. Naval Academy, an M.S. in Technical Management from Johns Hopkins University and a certificate in Space Systems from Naval Postgraduate School.
Samantha Lei | T3 Program Manager. Samantha joined Fuse in 2022 to manage the company’s Tactical Technologies Toolset (T3) remote network and system monitoring and management product. She places a heavy emphasis on systems engineering as well as systems integration and testing. Before joining Fuse, she worked in senior systems engineering roles for nearly 20 years. Samantha holds a B.S. in Electrical and Electronics Engineering from the University of Maryland.
Santosh Philip | Integrated Systems Program Manager. Santosh has been at Fuse for nearly five years and is skilled at understanding and refining software processes, including the critical steps of defining and establishing system and software requirements to meet customer needs. He leads key product development areas including the joint TENTaCLE architecture and our DARE airborne networking gateway. Harnessing more than 20 years experience in senior engineering roles, he is accomplished in managing multiple cross functional development programs and in directing the design and architecture of engineering software applications. Santosh earned a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and a M.S. in Mechanical Engineering from the University of California, Berkeley.
